The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Premiere

We join our Mystic Fall favourites after the summer, Stefan has been gone all summer long (we know he’s been underwater) the others have assumed that he is just wallowing from the new relationship status of Damon and Elena.

Elena and Caroline are preparing to go to college; Caroline is trying desperately in vain to get the elusive Tyler back to her side. Now that he is allowed back in Mystic Falls is he ever going to appear? Personally, I liked what was going on with Caroline/Klaus and the slight possibility of Caroline/Stefan. But one is now on a spinoff show and one is underwater so I’m praying for a new love interest at college for her. Damon and Elena have been playing house all summer, bathing in the luxury of a guilt free environment sans Stefan.

Stefan is still trapped underwater, dying and coming back to life over and over again; he keeps hallucinating with Damon telling him to turn off his humanity so that he will not feel the pain of dying. Just as he is about to give this up, Elena appears in his dreams telling him to stay with her he will get through.

Matt has returned from his adventures with Rebekah, they had fun on the road, however, when she leaves for New Orleans (going to the Originals) a figure from the road pitches up and Matt is in a little spot of bother. Who are these Vamps? And what do they want with Matt?

Bonnie is trying to accept her new life as a ghost; she is keeping up the premise that she is still alive by getting Jeremy to send postcards and texts to her dad and friends. However, Jeremy is struggling with the opposite, the transition from dead to alive and the all dreaded return to school. In which one day back and he is already expelled, if they were not vampires goodness knows how they would have got into college.

Silas is running around town screwing with everyone, he lets slip to Liz who he is but quickly compels her to forget everything. Question is what does he want with Katherine, in this quest he reveals to Damon who he really is and will only tell him the location of Stefan if he surrenders Katherine. Trouble is a newly human Katherine had already come to Damon asking for help in her weakened state and he sent her out of town with Jeremy. On the way out of town they crash and Jeremy is left for dead (really looking after himself with his second chance) until hero Damon pitches up to feed him blood after his promise to Elena to look after her little brother.

It’s not all going swimmingly in college for the girls either; they have a roommate when they thought it would just be them (Making it hard for them to be themselves) The new roommate is all but a bit suspicious as she drinks vervain water. Then at a campus party she rings the girls in panic claiming she is being chased, she then drops down dead in front of the girls. The campus claims that it is a suicide but the girls know better, they can recognise a vampire bite when they see one. The plot thickens as on the dead girl’s phone there is a photograph of her with Elena’s dad.

In true Vampire Diaries style it is not the only murder, Silas uses his mind control over the whole town and slits the town mayors throat i.e. Bonnie’s dad, the only one to witness this is Bonnie, but her screams are unheard. Is it just me or does Silas make Klaus look like a mouse (his presence is missed though)

Final Thoughts: I like that there is going to be a mystery surrounding Elena’s dad.

The new villain is going to be interesting as he can appear as anyone and will be even better when Stefan gets out of his watery grave, mistaken identities all around.

Let’s hope they introduce some more new characters as the death rate is getting higher. Hopefully a new love interest for Caroline, Tyler is too flaky.

I struggle how to see they will keep up the Bonnie saga, hope she does not appear all season as a ghost. However, now that Jeremy is human again it allows for the revisit of fan favourites such as Ric. Plus is it just me or is Jeremy HUGE.

I like Damon happy, it suits him that he got the girl, but I hope he does not lose the bad boy attitude that made us fall in love with him in the first place.

It’s good that Matt has his own storyline this season he always seems a bit redundant.
